Non-Fiction Book Publishers' Trip to Germany

In an effort to link up Indian and German book industries, the German Book Office New Delhi organizes professional tours to Germany for Indian Publishers. The focus in 2009 was on children’s books and this year, 2010, the focus will be on non-fiction books.

The selected group of publishing professionals will be travelling to Munich and Berlin to meet and interact with their German counterparts. The trip will include visits to all the important non-fiction books publishers and will give the participants the opportunity to meet with publishers, rights managers, editors and authors, and get invaluable insights into this segment of the German market while exchanging ideas, new concepts and negotiate rights.

In 1999, he moved to Ravensburger Verlag where he had overall responsibility for sales as from 2002. Joachim Kaufmann has been managing director at Carlsen Verlag in Hamburg since March 2006.

He has been the Director - Marketing & Sales at Loewe Children Books since 2006, before which he was Director Sales & Advertising at the same company. In 1996 Ralf Rebscher was sales manager in Lexikothek publishing house (Bertelsmann), then shifted to Xenos children books in 1997 in the same position and later in 2000 to Arena children books as sales manager.

Sayoni Basu, Director Publishing - Scholastic India
Sayoni Basu was educated in Calcutta and Oxford. She has been working in publishing since 1998 and has been working in children’s publishing since 2001, when she took charge of Puffin, the children’s imprint of Penguin Books. Subsequently, she joined Scholastic in 2005 as Director Publishing.

Samir Patil, CEO & Founder of ACK Media
Mr. Samir Patil (37) is the CEO & Founder of ACK Media, India’s leading entertainment and education company for young audiences. The company owns some of India's most-loved brands. Peter Pannke's ‘Dreamtalker’ - Discussion and book release

Peter Pannke, a German indologist, sinologist and musicologist describes himself as a singer, dreamer and storyteller. He is a well-known broadcaster with more than 4,000 features and radio
plays to his credit. He has contributed immensely to bringing Indian traditions to culturally interested audiences in Germany and was awarded the Rabindranath Tagore Cultural Prize in October 2009. His book Dreamtalker - Songs, Poems, Essays is being released by Daastaan, New Delhi.

Renate Reichstein will talk about new trends in children's books publishing in Germany with new segments like All Age, Comics, Fantasy etc. Within this there will be an emphasis on some major books and authors in the last century and new talent to watch out for. She will further elaborate, with figures and statistics, the vibrant and substantial children's book market in Germany, and aspects peculiar to an organized book industry.
As Vice President of the Association of German Children's Book Publishers (avj) she will also provide information about the major children's books publishers in the German speaking world. An overview on what is on offer in terms of rights and licenses from Germany will also be discussed. She will also talk about the importance and the process of forming constructive associations. The talk is aimed for people in publishing wanting to know more about the German children's book industry and building new contacts.

Renate Reichstein:
Born in Hamburg in April 1954, Renate Reichstein studied Philosophy and European History in Freiburg. Since January 2004 she is the Vice President of the avj - Association of German Children's Book Publishers. In April 1989 she started working with Verlagsgruppe Oetinger in Hamburg and became Rights Director in 1996, a position she is also currently holding. From 1980 to 1984 she was a researcher at the University of Hannover, researching the history of Luebeck and its architecture.

Buch.Zeit is an organisation that is commissioned and acts on behalf of the Federal State Government of Upper Austria and the State Education Authority of Upper Austria. The main objective of Buch.Zeit is the promotion of reading and speaking skills of children and teenagers from their birth up to secondary school. With more than 60 years of experience in promoting reading, reading techniques and interactive class room techniques etc. they also organize seminars and workshops for schools and provide material to librarians and consultancy services on reading techniques.

John Dolan, OBE, Birmingham, UK
is an independent consultant on library policy and strategy. Until 2008 he was the Head of Library Policy for England at the Museums Libraries and Archives Council.
Prior to that he was Head of Birmingham Libraries one of the largest library services in the UK, including the Central Library 40 community libraries, mobile, home library and school library services and the prison library. For his last two years in Birmingham John was also responsible for the city’s early years and family learning services, the youth service and adult education.
Most of John’s career has been in community librarianship in the urban areas of his home city of Manchester, followed by St. Helens and finally the multicultural, multifaith and youthful city of Birmingham.
He has contributed to a number of national and overseas conferences on the future direction of libraries and their relevance to social, education, lifelong learning, cultural and economic need. Recently he has been working with the Max Mueller Bhavan on library developments in India and with the British Council in Bhopal.
John has always had a strong commitment to children’s library services,
“Library work with children and families is central to the public library purpose. Reading in early years is vital both for a happy childhood and as the foundation for skill and confidence as an adult. School libraries mirror the work of the classroom with the opportunity to exercise the skill of independent learning. Dhir Jhingran, Room to Read, Regional Director (Asia)
With over 15 years of professional experience in primary education, Dhir Jhingran most recently served as director of elementary education for the Ministry of Human Resource Development in India, where he was responsible for guiding the Education For All (EFA) program, a national campaign to universalize elementary education in the country. He previously held the positions of mission director for EFA in the State of Assam, and national program manager for the United Nation's International Primary Education Program. Dhir Jhingram has supervised programs in reading comprehension, computer education, classroom construction and language development. He is also the author of two books that focus on educational access for disadvantaged children, and is currently Regional Director (Asia) of Room to Read. Founded in 2000, the organization is based on the belief that "World Change Starts with Educated Children."

The discussion will focus on the status and working conditions of literary translators in Europe and will give examples of best practice in the relationship between translators and publishers, and of the infrastructures providing support for professional translators.

JUMPSTART – Illustrating Children’s Books Masterclass
When? 2 & 4 -5 September 2009

This master class in Delhi and two-day workshop in Ahmedabad are intended to look at how children’s picture books are created and how an illustrator can improve and refine her or his own work. It would cover such topics as:
• Which comes first? The picture or the story?
• Illustrating for children: know your audience
• Cultural constraints/playing to your strengths
• Practical session on illustrating a particular story/character/scenario
• One-on-one portfolio feedback sessions
• Understanding formats and sizes
• Working with words – fonts and styles as well as in terms of content

Participants would have an arts/illustrator background and training, and would be interested in developing their portfolios and refining their work.

JUMPSTART – Writing for Children Master Class

This two-day workshop is intended to refine and deepen writers’ understanding of the children’s book market, from picture books for young children to writing for teens and young adults. It would involve
• practical writing exercises
• how text and illustrations work together
• adapting your language for different age groups
• fiction, non-fiction, poetry, humour;
• working with translations
• detailed feedback on on-going work
• pitching your work to a publisher
• knowing the market – constraints and possibilities.

Sarah Odedina, Publisher, Bloomsbury Children's list, UK. Sarah began her publishing career in 1988 in the rights department of Penguin books. In 1992, she moved to the Watts Publishing Group where she was Rights Director of Watts non-fiction and Orchard fiction. As Publisher at Bloomsbury she has overseen and managed one of the biggest successes in global children’s publishing, the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling. Bloomsbury also publishes some of the best-known, and most widely-loved children’s authors and Sarah’s experience both in editing and publishing new authors, as well as promoting children’s literature, and selling (and buying) rights in different territories, has established her as a leading expert in the field internationally.

Anushka Ravishankar, a mathematics graduate, is among the best known Indian children’s writers today. With over 20 books of verse, fiction and non-fiction to her credit, she has written for all ages – from picture books for the very young, to imaginative fiction for older readers, such as her acclaimed book, Moin and the Monster (Puffin). Her books have been translated into a number of languages, both in India and across the world.

Registration:
Participants should be writers who have some degree of experience, and are actively working on writing for children. The workshop would be open to published and non-published writers.
